Who was Ramon Matias Mella?
(Santo Domingo, D.R. 1816 – 1864) Ramon Matias Mella was one of the leaders of the Dominican Independence Movement. In 1838, sixteen years after the Hispaniola was unified under the Haitian dominion, Ramon Matias Mella participated with other Dominican patriarchs such as Juan Pablo Duarte and Francisco Del Rosario Sanchez, in the organization of a secret society called “La Trinitaria”. The main objective was to bring down the regimen of the Haitian dictator Jean Pierre Boyer.
Due to the absence of Duarte, Mella along with Sanchez started the Revolutionary Movement and in January 1844 the Act of Independence was formulated.
On the night of February 27, 1844, Mella is one of the first to get to the Door of Mercy. He encouraged a few that were afraid not to abandoned the Door of Mercy in an effective and impulsive manner, Mella then shoots his famous “trabucazo” at the Door of Mercy, and from there they all walked towards “La Puerta Del Conde”, where the freedom of the Dominican Republic is proclaimed and the Dominican flag is raised.
Birth of the Ramon Matias Mella Softball League.
On November 22, 2002, a few friends such as Mr. Bernandino Viñas Peña, Victor Serrano, Miguel Montero and Jaime Peguero, got together to form the biggest and most popular softball league of Providence, RI, the Ramon Matias Mella Softball League. This league consists of 16 teams which are distributed in four (4) divisions, A, B, C and D.
At that time there were no softball leagues playing during the weekdays in the City of Providence, which prevented some members of our community from playing the game. Therefore, this league was created to satisfy this necessity and at the same time to provide a sporting activity that the community could enjoy during the weekdays.
The Ramon Matias Mella League is the only one that since the beginning of its existence has played on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, which has greatly contributed to its popularity.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our Mayor, David N. Cicilline, for supporting us and helping us succeed in this project. Also, we thank him for always being part of the Opening Days and Trophy Ceremonies, where we award our talented team members for their participation.
